Coming Undone
"Coming on Undone" is a 15 by 15-inch watercolor piece that's really close to my heart, blending the ideas of human-made and natural worlds coming together. It all started when I stumbled upon a rusting cable winding its way through smooth stones during a fly-fishing trip at the North Platte River. That scene struck a chord with me, as if the cable and stones were whispering stories of times gone by. Here it was, this forgotten piece of metal gradually coming apart over rocks that have been shaped by years of water and weather.
In this painting, I wanted to capture that moment. I got down to the nitty-gritty of textures, making sure every little strand of the cable felt real and corroded, from the rust patches to the frays. Those stones beneath carry a range of colors, with greys and earthy tones leading into deeper charcoals, each with its own unique marks. Despite using just four colors, I played around with layers to add depth and fascinated looks, almost like there's a story you can feel but can't quite put into words.
This piece is as much about rediscovering the abandoned as it is about nature itself, and I hope it prompts you to think about where these worn elements have been and what they might say if they could speak. "Coming on Undone" reflects on the beauty of things falling apart and how they fit into the world around them, reminding us that there's always more than meets the eye, even in the most unexpected places.
