Davies' Chuck Wagon Diner
Measuring 21.625 by 21.625 inches, this watercolor captures a moment of Americana with the iconic Davies’ Chuck Wagon Diner sign. Painted in the morning light, I focused on the strong shadows and highlights that bring out every detail—from the wooden slats and metal rivets to the glowing bulbs framing the bold “DINER” letters. The cowboy leaning against the sign, with his white hat and apron, red shirt, and blue jeans, adds a warm, nostalgic feel that takes me back to mid-20th-century roadside diners.
I really enjoyed the challenge of working in watercolor to capture the light and shadow across all the textures and surfaces. It was a joy to paint the weathered finish and the little details that give the sign its character. Finding this sign on a wrong turn in Denver made this piece feel personal—it’s a local landmark I wanted to honor.
This painting is both a celebration of a special place and a chance to explore the beauty in everyday scenes and historic signs. Its balanced composition and rich colors make it a great addition to any home or workspace, reminding us of the charm and history in roadside Americana.
